How to Find The Right Therapist for Your Mental Health Needs

Looking for the right therapist can be a daunting process, but it is an important step in taking care of your mental health. Just like dating, it might take some time to find the right fit. Whether you are moving areas, your insurance has changed, or you need someone with different expertise, here are some tips to help you find the right therapist for you.

Use insurance. Contact them for a list of therapists in your area who accept your insurance. This can be a good way to narrow down your search and ensure that you can afford the therapy you need. Make sure you understand your benefits as well as the limitations to confidentiality to be sure this makes the most sense for you. (I will speak more about insurance in an upcoming blog post.)

Search directories. Psychology Today is a popular directory to search for therapists in your area by issue, location, and insurance. Another option is to look for a directory within your specific mental health need. For example, Postpartum Support International has a list of providers who specialize in reproductive mental health or NEDA offers a directory of providers who treat eating disorders. If certain treatment modalities are of interest to you, many of the certifying organizations offer directories of providers certified in their modalities. EMDRIA, as an example, lists providers who specialize in EMDR Therapy. Consider searching for your mental health concern to see if there are specialized organizations that have directories.

Ask your doctor. Medical healthcare providers are realizing more and more that mental and physical health is intertwined. Mental health issues can manifest as physical pain and illness as well as some illnesses can cause anxious and depressive symptoms. Many doctors have a network of therapists that they trust and can recommend to their patients.

Word of mouth. Ask around and see who your family and friends are seeing for therapy. They may have valuable insights and recommendations.
